McKinley Village Update

November 05, 2009

November 4, 2009

The McKinley Village project remains on hold because John Laing Homes, one of the partners in the project, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  It is unclear at this point, how long it will be before the process moves forward; however, the applicant just recently told City staff that the project may no longer be held up by the bankruptcy proceeding and the applicant may be ready in the coming months to restart the process.

I share the concerns raised about the project as it was proposed before the bankruptcy.  The draft EIR has not been released, and will not be released unless and until the project is revived. However, the traffic study was released in mid-December 2008 and is available for your review.  You can download the study from my website at www.cityofsacramento.org.

The project as originally proposed would  require a General Plan Amendment and several entitlements, including a rezone to designate land uses and zoning consistent with the proposed project, a tentative Map to subdivide 48 acres into 394 lots, a Special Permit for Alternative Housing and a Subdivision Modifications to establish non-standard street sections and alleys.  I met almost a year ago with all of the neighborhood and business associations for the surrounding neighborhoods to develop some common principles for evaluating this project (see attached).  If the project moves forward, I will resume this dialogue, together with the valuable input I heard from neighbors at a Community Meeting hosted by ESPTF on October 7, 2009, at Theodore Judah School .
